We know we tend to talk a lot about red meat here at DB Foods, but we have been sourcing and providing wholesale poultry to butchers, caterers and restaurants for over 30 years and are huge fans of the UK’s most popular meat – chicken!
In 2017, the amount of chicken and white meat consumed by the average person in the UK overtook red meat for the first time and it isn’t hard to see why. Perceived as a cheaper alternative to the likes of beef and lamb (though the industry-wide rise in the cost of feed, energy and transportation has contributed to an increase in wholesale chicken prices,) chicken meat is not only incredibly versatile to cook with, but also has a number of health benefits.
Chicken is a recognised source of protein and doesn’t contain much fat, especially its lean white meat most commonly bought as breast fillets, which helps maintain bone density. The meat also contains amino acids that help build muscle tissue, so with stronger muscles and healthier bones, there is a decrease in the risk of injury and diseases such as osteoporosis.
Always recommended in diets for people trying to lose weight, chicken is proven to help people feel fuller for longer, helping with weight management and reducing the risk of heart disease.
But what you may not be aware of is that chicken can actually help you feel good! It contains the amino acid ‘tryptophan’ which has been linked to higher levels of serotonin (the ‘feel good’ hormone) in our brains. The tryptophan levels in chicken aren’t high enough to make you feel instantly euphoric, (can you imagine people taking a ‘hit’ of chicken?) but studies show it could help to boost serotonin levels when paired with other factors.
‘Even with the recent rise in price, we are still receiving bulk buy orders for wholesale chicken products because it is the most economical way for customers to offer them,’ says Stuart Robson, Purchasing and Trading Director. ‘We are certainly in constant demand as a poultry distributor, with orders ranging from whole organic chicken to portioned breast, quarters and wings.’
With the appetite for chicken showing no signs of waning, DB Foods has not only made poultry a feature of its Deli offering of cooked meats, but has made it a focus for many marinades and seasonings in its Sundries range.
